MTP Forum Speaker interview: “There are numerous examples of companies that are blurring ethical lines to ensure they are not left behind”
Peter Skillman, the Global Head of Design for Royal Philips, says that “AI is a powerful tool that generates near business hysteria with radical roadmap changes and “trials” without full validation.” He will be speaking at the Millennium Technology Prize Forum’s session Humans in Charge.
“What does AI look like from the lens of a designer and “the future of health?” AI doesn’t change anything, and it also changes everything – and it is happening faster. I will show a no-nonsense point of view on how to manage these questions with a focus on working backwards from the customer”, Peter Skillman says.
In our Humans in Charge session, we will try to find ways on ensuring that humanity is able to control the technology it creates. How can we reach this “utopia” where machines and humans work together in harmony?
“Trust but verify. We all have to apply a set of mutually applied principles to:
1. Make trust and authorship clear (transparency)
2. Center on the well-being of others with the sustainable development of society
3. Protect your privacy
4. Remove bias and discrimination
5. Work backwards from who you are helping (that’s empathy).
Sounds simple doesn’t it? No! There are numerous examples of companies that are blurring ethical lines to ensure they are not left behind. Values are important here, 1) Act with integrity, 2) Simplify customers’ lives and 3) Operate as one team. For Philips this is delivering better care to more people.”
What is it that you most would like to tell the world about the possibilities of your field?
“Design is about the transmission of our culture and our values. When we do that well, we unlock the creative potential of other people.
We seek your appreciation for a better version of the world through an experience that we make. When combined with the transcendent purpose of delivering better care for more people, Designers in Health are also positioned to find novel ways to do it sustainably.”
