Dr. Päivi Törmä is Aalto University’s Professor. Her areas of research include long-range coherence phenomena, ultracold gases, nanoplasmonics, quantum optics and nanoscience. She has a research post as Academy Professor for a fixed five-year term in 2017–2021. Törmä has held visiting positions in numerous international universities and she has won several Finnish and international science prizes and distinctions. She is a former vice chair of the Board of the Academy of Finland in 2010–2014.
